Photographer, journalist, and documentary filmmaker Ben Martin brings several years of traveling with, observing, and photographing Marcel Marceau to his book. In the spirit of the master mime's art, Martin tells his story more in images than in words. This visual portrait of the world's most renowned Mime artist shows Marceau from several points of view. In the first section, "In Close-up", Marceau steps in front of the camera in a studio, and takes us through the many attitudes and emotions of some of his greatest works of Mime. We see changing faces from "The Maskmaker", poignant moments from "The Cage", the magic illusions of a tightrope walker, and the innocence of Marceau's alter-ego, Bip. In the next section, "On Stage", Martin captures the master at workcreating his show, in preparation backstage, and finally onstage in performance. Finally, Martin's camera looks at Marceau "Off Stage," at his country home outside of Paris with his family. Page after page reveals the legendary performer in artistic and vivid color and black & white photographs. The preceding text gives us "A Brief History of Mime" and tells the story of Marceau's life from his childhood, through his education as an actor and mime, to his rise to the top of his art and worldwide acclaim. For fans of the art, Marcel Marceau: Master of Mime is a wonderful portrait of its most famous practitioner, and for Mime artists it is an essential part of any collection of books on the art of silence.
